Thompson: red-card rule is "silly"
April 18th 2008 01:13
Geelong coach Mark Thompson believes the introduction of a send-off rule following Barry Hall's hit on Brent Staker would be an over-the-top reaction.
Hall was suspended for seven weeks after knocking out Staker at ANZ last Saturday night, and said later he should have been red-carded for the incident, a rule employed in soccer.
Thompson says he hates the idea of changing rules in the league without close examination.
"I don't like compulsive change of rules," Thompson said this morning.
"Any change of rule should be well and truly debated, thought out, communicated and I think to change it on one punch would be quite silly."
The reigning premiers meet a Sydney outfit buoyed by the return of Nick Davis at Skilled Stadium tomorrow, but Thompson says the Swans will still be competitive without Hall.
And he is unmoved by his sides inabilty to kick more than 90 points against the Swans in their past eight clashes.
"They've got the best defence in the competition," Thompson said.
"They'll really strangle you and make it hard to score. That's the sort of game it's going to be."
